Evolution not Revolution

Teamwild.tv evolved out of a previous site we built for the same client, Ian Harford, who is an international presence (some would say force of nature) in the world of hunting and target shooting. Ian is a successful businessman and athlete who has competed at the highest levels, so when he asked us to build a platform for him to bring his personal presence to the web, we knew there could be no half measures.

A platform for growth

Ianharford.com allowed Ian to blog about his passion for bow and rifle hunting, field target shooting and field sports generally. As his brand became more popular we were able to advise him on the best approaches to creating a presence in social media, a platform he took to with great enthusiasm (he has nearly 5000 Friends on Facebook and over 2500 Followers on Twitter). We then integrated his social media content into the blog through a custom Wordpress extension that pulled content from Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and Google+ and displayed it in a single stream.

Eventually Ian realised that he was not able to keep up with the demands of creating the content required on his own, and so the idea of Team Wild was born, a group of like minded individuals who would follow their passions for hunting, and would record their adventures, insights and experiences in blogs and eventually video. In order to realise this a rebranding was required, moving the focus away from Ian as an individual to Team Wild as the group. The website we had built for ianharford.com was starting to feel the strain of the additional requirements made of it, so it was decided to rebuild it as teamwild.tv.

Keep what worked, change what didn't.

Teamwild.tv Video Page

We knew when we built teamwild.tv the focus was to be as much on the growing social media profile and YouTube channel as it was on the blog. With this in mind we built the site in Wordpress (the same Content Management System we had used for ianharford.com) and created custom extensions to allowed the site to integrate with Team Wilds presence on YouTube, Facebook, Flickr and Twitter easily. Ian is a busy individual and as much of the day to day admin of the site that can be automated the better, so automatically updating the site each time a new video was added to the YouTube channel was a major advantage.

Rebuilding the site also allowed us to look at the efficiency of many of the social media and other extensions we had built for ianharford.com. Some of these were responsible for slowing the page load of the original site, but after re-engineering the code, we were able to maintain the same or better functionality while improving the load times of all pages.

Keeping up with the irrepressible Ian Harford

Teamwild.tv World of Team Wild Page

We enjoy having Ian as a client as he both challenges us to exceed expectations and can see the value in what we create. We know that teamwild.tv will continue to evolve as Ian continues to grow his YouTube channel and social media presence. Production qualities in Team Wild's videos are improving with every episode and new sponsors mean the locations are getting more exotic. All this is growing their following and leading to an increase in traffic to the teamwild.tv website, so to meet this growing popularity we moved the site onto a new server which also provides an automatic continuous daily backup.

Given Ian's facility to grasp the importance of changes within the web, there will no doubt be future challenges from Team Wild, but we know that whatever they are we will enjoy rising to meet them.
